Learning to Move Slower

Ahhh…it’s my mother’s birthday yet again. How does it keep happening that my posts seem to land on the day she was born? Well anyway, this year I don’t want to talk about her—so I won’t.

The semester just ended. I took my last exam yesterday, and now I get to drown in research until the spring semester arrives…YAY! Just kidding. I actually really enjoy campus when no one’s there and I can focus on research in peace. It’s quiet, almost sacred. Plus, I can put my headphones on full blast and sing and dance around without worrying about undergrads catching me through the door.

I’m not entirely sure if what I’m doing in my lab right now is correct, but I do enjoy making things grow and autoclaving. I’ve realized I actually quite like the mundaneness of lab work, even when it’s grunt work. I’ve been told I can use undergrads to make media or do simple procedures, but that would take all the fun away, so I don’t like it. But now… if you asked me to wash test tubes? I would give my right arm for someone else to do them for me. It’s annoying and tedious, my shirt never stays dry, and I hate it.

Outside of research, I’ve been leaning hard into my homebody hobbies…mainly knitting and crocheting. I want to try knitting a sweater sometime in the next couple of months, but we’ll see how that goes. I used to think I hated the Maine winter because it’s so disgustingly cold, but I think I’m starting to enjoy the slowness it brings.

My body is tired and honestly needs the kind of rest that comes from staying in and doing hobbies that require no real physical effort. As I get older, I find myself craving a slower pace of life. I’ll do almost anything for a slow morning…I’m a sucker for them. Not necessarily sleeping in, but waking up just in time to see the sunrise, coffee in hand, taking my dog out to piss. Then coming back inside, making a fancy little breakfast, and lounging in pajamas until I absolutely have to get ready. It’s blissful.

Anyway, that’s all I have to say for today.

STAY WARM.
